Food & Drink Policy

The Margaret R. Grundy Memorial Library is a private organization operated under the auspices of The Grundy Foundation and governed by a Board of Trustees. The Trustees reserve the right to change this Policy of accommodation without notice, and have unfettered discretion to deny any individual or organization access to the Library space, its materials, or programs if it is in the best interests of the Foundation to do so.


The Grundy Foundation strives to create a welcoming, clean and comfortable environment for all to enjoy. Consistent with this goal, food and drink are allowed in designated spaces on a limited basis and should be consumed in a considerate and responsible manner. Food and drink pose a potential risk to library and museum collections, equipment, and furnishings. In order to protect our resources and facilities from damage, we ask that you abide by this policy.

Grundy Library:

  • Eating food or having open beverages of any kind in the Library is prohibited, unless in specified areas.
  • Food and drink are permissible for special functions in the Library as authorized by the Library Director.
  • Non-alcoholic drinks in approved, spill-proof containers are generally allowed. Containers not considered acceptable include open cups or mugs, aluminum cans, etc.
  • Food and drink are not permitted while using Grundy Archive and/or local history materials, library computers, printers, photocopiers, microfilm readers or other electrical equipment.
  • Library users are liable for any damage to library materials or equipment.
  • Certain areas of the Library may be designated as “No Food or Drink” zones.
  • Delivery of food to the Library is not allowed.
  • Immediately report spills to staff.
  • Be respectful of others by disposing of trash properly and leaving all areas clean for use by others.
  • Unattended food and drink openly displayed in public areas will be confiscated and discarded.
  • Food and drink are allowed in designated eating area(s) of the Library under the following conditions:
    • While spill-proof containers are not required in this area, please use caution especially when using library materials.
    • Wrapped snacks are permitted such as chips, cookies, candy, etc.; other foods not considered snack food are not allowed.
    • Meals are strictly prohibited. This includes fast food and take-out meals.
    • Visitors are encouraged to consume items that are odor free, noiseless, and do not leave stains. Hot, odorous, or messy foods such as pizza, burgers, and fries which might disturb others are not allowed. If your food or beverage is disturbing others, you will be asked to remove it.

Users violating this policy will be asked to remove their food and/or drink from the Library.

Grundy Foundation – Grounds:

  • Food and non-alcoholic drinks are generally approved for consumption in the Foundation’s exterior public spaces.
  • Be respectful of others by disposing of trash properly and leaving all areas clean for use by others.
  • Unattended food and drink openly displayed in public areas will be confiscated and discarded.
  • Delivery of food to the Foundation grounds is not allowed.

Users violating this policy will be asked to remove their food and/or drink from the Foundation property.

Grundy Museum:

  • Our collections are rare and irreplaceable and, as such, all food, chewing gum, and beverages are prohibited in the Museum.

Any individual not abiding by these rules and regulations may be required to leave the Foundation premises.
All staff are authorized to enforce this Policy. Staff will contact law enforcement if deemed advisable.

As a private foundation, the Grundy Board of Trustees reserves the right to change this Policy without notice, and has unfettered discretion to deny any individual or organization access to the Library and Museum buildings, premises, materials, events or programs if it is in the best interests of the Foundation to do so.
