The Children’s Area: A Cornerstone of Community at the Grundy Library
In a small town like Bristol Borough, the Margaret R. Grundy Memorial Library isn’t just a space for books; it’s a place for gathering. It’s where families come after school, and on the weekends, where parents can meet other parents, and where kids take their first steps into a world of stories and opportunities.
It’s a space where everyone belongs no matter who they are. That sense of belonging is what makes our community so strong! The library is not just about books, it’s about community and connection.
The First Stop on a Family’s Learning Journey
The children’s area is the first introduction families have to the library, and sometimes their first experience with early learning outside the home.
“I often see parents and caregivers forming friendships, finding support, and building routines that center around learning and play. For many new parents or those new to the area, the library becomes their anchor – a safe, free, welcoming space where they can connect with others and watch their children grow emotionally and socially,” said Houda Ouadda, Community Services and Outreach Manager.

What Families Love Most About Our Children’s Area
Parents love that the library offers a space dedicated to children. They also appreciate that the library offers children a sense of independence – the chance to pick out their own books, play and explore safely.
For many families in town this is one of the few spaces where learning and affordable play come together in such a meaningful way. “Families show appreciation for our programs, our friendly staff, and resources such as our VOX books, board books for our little readers, and our take home technology such as Launchpads and Whazoodles.” Houda said.
The library brings everyone together. You will see families who have lived in Bristol for generations alongside families who have just moved here. It’s one of the few spaces where everyone shares the same space and feels equally welcome. That’s powerful in a small town; it reminds us that we are part of something much bigger.
Families have shared that they’d love to see more interactive, sensory play options: wall-mounted toys, puzzles that support motor skill development, and flexible furniture that make it easy for caregivers to sit and play with children of all ages – infants, toddlers, and school aged-kids alike.
You can make a difference by supporting our efforts to refurbish our children’s area.

Investing in the Heart of Our Community
“When we invest in spaces like the children’s area, we’re really investing in the heart of the community. These are spaces that help shape childhood memories!” Houda added. “Years from now, these same children will walk in remembering the programs they attended, and the librarian who greeted them with a big smile and remembered their name.”
That kind of impact is forever.
