Summer STEM
Summer is a wonderful time for parents and children to explore the world of STEM at home. What is STEM? STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math and these projects below are a bit mad science and a lot of fun. Let us know if you make any of these at home!
Bubbles:
Who doesn’t love bubbles? We love them at Grundy Library and they are a terrific home experiment to try. You can use normal household items to create bubble wands and a few basic baking ingredients to have a bubble experiment party at home.
Oobleck
What is Oobleck? It is a non-Newtonian fluid that boggles the mind and makes life a little more enjoyable. There are many types of fluids that fall under non-Newtonian, but this one is highly entertaining for those that like getting their hands a little messy.

Tornado in a Bottle
This sensory project shows how opposing forces can create a whirlpool/tornado effect that children love. Add a little food coloring and glitter and you have a sensory bottle. For this project you need:
- 2 empty bottles (20 oz or 2 liter)
- Washer
- Saran wrap
- Duct Tape
- Optional: Food Coloring and/or glitter
- Or a PVC connector (something like this https://a.co/d/arQwqXV)
